Does stretching improve range of motion?

Many people believe that stretching improves the body’s range of motion. While there is some truth to this, stretching does not directly enhance one’s range of motion, but instead increases flexibility and mobility in the joints. This, in turn, allows for training to strengthen and build the muscles around your joints to improve your range of motion.

Exercises that improve flexibility

There are many exercises you can implement to help you improve your flexibility! These exercises are ones that use large muscle groups to move through a full range of motion.

For example, when strength training, pair specialized stretches with squats and lunges as a great way to help improve tight hip flexors. If you practice Pilates or yoga, try poses like Warrior II, Child’s Pose and Downward Dog to help improve flexibility in your hamstrings.
